Dr Mohammad Didare Alam Muhsin Professor, Department of Pharmacy
PROFILE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Dr Mohammmad Didare Alam Muhsin was born to Mr Mohammad Zahurul Alam and Mst. Nur Jahan Begum on January 10, 1971 in Pekua Upazilla of Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh. He completed his B. Pharm. (Honours) and M. Pharm. (Thesis Group) from Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1991 and 1992, respectively with outstanding results.
Dr Muhsin is currently serving as the Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy, Jahangirnagar University. He has taken the charge for 3 years on June 16, 2021. Dr Muhsin joined the Department as an Assistant Professor in 2002 and has been promoted to the post of Professor in 2015. Earlier, he also served as a Lecturer and later as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy, University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC) from 1996 to 2002.
Meanwhile, Dr Muhsin pursued his PhD in Pharmacy in Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia as an International Postgraduate Research Scholar (IPRS) and earned his degree in 2014. In his PhD research, he endeavoured to explore a new strategy to address the issues of enhancing aerosolization and controlling drug release — two major concerns of present-day research on DPI formulation. This work involved chemical conjugation of L-leucine to a popular release-modifier—chitosan that both enhanced aerosolization and prolonged drug release from a nanoparticulate DPI formulation, compared with that made of unmodified chitosan. The synthesized conjugate also showed improved aqueous solubility, which might prove useful for solving the solubility problem of chitosan — a crucial deterrent to adequate exploitation of this promising polymer in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. In addition, he assessed toxicity and inflammatory potential of chitosan, its conjugate and their nanoparticles using a pulmonary epithelial cell line, BEAS-2B as an in vitro model. In recognition to his innovative work, he was selected for 2013 International Pharmaceutical Excipients Council (IPEC) Foundation Graduate Student Scholarship Award offered in the Annual Meeting and Exposition of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) held in Texas, USA.
Dr Muhsin has been maintaining a keen interest in research with his current focus being controlled delivery of drugs using micro- and nanoparticulate systems. Earlier, he also had a long experience of working on phytochemical and antimicrobial screening of medicinal plants. Dr Muhsin have so far 15 articles to his credit in refereed journals.
Dr Muhsin also has a good hand in popular writing. He has published nearly 80 articles on current affairs and health issues (including COVID-19) both in Bengali and English National Dailies in recent years.
